Q&A with Carrie Dunlop

What first inspired you to pursue a career in sustainable interior design?
At the start of my interior design journey, I was always troubled by the amount of waste at building sites. I felt there had to be a way of recycling all the excess wood from the kitchen, the tiles being chucked into skips. I wanted to create spaces that felt both luxurious and sustainable, spaces clients would be proud of.
How do you ensure both elegance and eco-consciousness coexist in your projects?
To me, a space cannot be elegant if it’s not been consciously and sustainably created. Sustainable luxury is about creating environments that are both sumptuous and sensitive to the planet’s needs.
Throughout your travels, which aesthetics have you always felt most drawn to or inspired by?
I’ve constantly been drawn to the Scandinavian aesthetic, but also French, Moroccan and African palette. I’m more and more taking inspiration from Australian designers; their use of natural light, plants, and water fosters a seamless bond between indoor spaces and the natural world, bringing the outside in.
Both Aspiga and Carrie Dunlop Design strive to put people and the planet first. What impact do you think making sustainable decisions both at home and in your wardrobe can have on a person’s positivity?
How can it feel good to have spaces and wardrobes filled with toxic mass produced products? Elegance and eco-consciousness can live side by side, and be visually stunning whilst psychologically and physically rejuvenating.
What advice would you offer someone who wanted to curate pieces for their home through a more sustainable lens?
Buy less, buy better. I would go to Vinterior for interesting pieces that tell a story and bring individuality to spaces. Second hand, flea markets, antique sales, show rooms… Like a well dressed individual, I think interior spaces look best when they’re not perfect. Individuality is key.
And finally, which is your favourite piece from Aspiga’s new Autumn Winter collection?
Fave Aspiga piece has to be the Zip Front Jumpsuit!
